Tidal Power Energy Generation

Tidal energy is a renewable energy. The work principle is the same with hydroelectric power, where the water used to turn turbines and generate electricity.

The advantage of tidal energy is electricity generate can be use for free, does’t require fuel, doesn’t cause the greenhouse effect, stable electricity production since the tides can be predicte.

But the tidal energy isn’t energy future because it has various weaknesses. Among them is the cost of making dam expensive and can damage the ecosystem of coastal area.

Tidal energy has estimated to produce 500 to 1000 MW of electricity per year. Tidal power plant (PLTPs) in the world located at the mouth of the river Rance in northern France. The power plant was built in 1966 and a capacity of 240 MW.

PLTPs the largest will be built in South Korea with capacity of 300 MV is capable to power for 200,000 homes. The project will be completed in 2015.

Tidal energy utilizing sea water movement in large numbers (tidal). As we know tide occurs twice a day, estimated at about 12 hours. Because the cycle can be predicted, it is very easy to take advantage of this tidal energy.

The work principle is very simple tidal energy. When the tide comes in sea water entered through the dam through a valve that can open automatically. When the tide receded, the valves in the dam is close so the sea water trapping in the dam. Trapped seawater was utilized to rotate the turbine.
