New Words Added in Oxford English Dictionary

New words 'Sexting,' 'Woot,' and 'Retweet' are the words recently recognized and included in the newly-released edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

Those social media and web-related terms are just among the 400 new words added to the 12th edition of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary .

Other words such as "textspeak" and "cyberbullying" are also in the dictionary's latest edition.

According to OED 12th edition editor Angus Stevenson, the creativity of today's Internet-using generation has given birth to a range of unusual sounding words.

"....the preoccupations of today's Generation Y have opened the door to some equally colourful vocabulary – how about momo, noob, nurdle, and woot?" he said.

"Google," "iPod," "podcasting" are already in the dictionary.

The Oxford English Dictionary also noted that technology has given new meanings to old terms like the word "friend" which is now also defined as "a contact on a social networking website" because of the success of social networking site Facebook.

The word "follower," on the other hand, is now also defined as "someone who is tracking a particular person, group, etc. on a social networking site."
